Bloom Groot

On June 20, 2024, the Zero Plastic Movement of the University of Kelaniya launched the “Bloom Groot” project in collaboration with the Homagama Samurdhi Bank Society. This initiative aims to promote bamboo as a sustainable alternative to plastic by planting bamboo trees. The project was conducted in conjunction with a larger bamboo planting campaign organized by the Zero Plastic National Movement and the London Stock Exchange.

The Bloom Groot project was held at the Homagama Sewa Piyasa premises, drawing enthusiastic participation from volunteers and staff from the Homagama Divisional Secretary office. The event was honored by the presence of the Homagama Assistant Divisional Secretary as the chief guest. During the event, over 50 bamboo trees were planted, with more than 50 environmentally conscious volunteers actively contributing to the effort.

The tree planting will have a lasting impact on the Homagama Seva Piyasa area, which is frequently visited by people attending the local government offices. By planting bamboo trees, the area will be transformed into a greener and more peaceful space, providing a calming environment for visitors. This initiative not only improves the surroundings but also promotes the use of bamboo as a sustainable alternative to plastic, aligning with the larger mission of creating a plastic-free society.

The Bloom Groot project serves as a vital step towards achieving environmental sustainability. By encouraging the use of bamboo, it offers the community a practical and eco-friendly solution to reduce plastic use. This initiative highlights the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and reflects the commitment of the Zero Plastic Movement to building a greener, cleaner future.
